Abergavenny is called The Gateway to Wales and there are plenty
of historic attractions to choose from. There is a castle in almost
every town in Monmouthshire. Raglan, Chepstow and White Castle are
especially worth a visit. www.castlewales.com/home.html
covers all the castles of Wales.
Visit the beautifully restored monuments in St Marys Church,
Abergavenny, the magnificent Tintern Abbey, Llanthony Priory and
the magical rood screen and wall paintings at remote Partrishow
Church.
Not far from Abergavenny is the World Heritage site at Blaenavon
with its Ironworks and Big Pit Mining Museum (open Feb-Nov). The
Roman Legionary fortress at Caerleon, dating back to AD 75, and
the Museum of Welsh Life at St. Fagans, Cardiff are well worth a
visit. www.nmgw.ac.uk
includes details of all these.
Abergavenny Food Festival (held in September) has been described 'The Glastonbury of Food Festivals' and reflects the quality of local
produce. The town has a weekly Tuesday market and good shops including
a fine local butcher.
